Learning the World
More space opera, with more of a first-contact bent. The back-and-forth viewpoint switch between the aliens and the humans reminded me of Vernor Vinge's "A Deepness in the Sky", which is a lot to live up to since that's one of the best books I've ever read. "Learning" is an entertaining diversion, and that's ok too.
